The Madikwe and Waterberg regions are located within 3-3½ hours drive of Johannesburg and offers travellers a malari free big five safari holiday. There are a variety of lodges in each of the reserves, ranging from more basic to five star luxury as well as child friendly options.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 hectare reserve close to the border of Botswana and is home to all the big five as well as being popular for its excellant wild dog sightings, amoungst a variety of other game and birdlife. The reserve has been rehabilitating since 1991 from what was once cattle farmlands and now offers a great wildlife experience.
The Waterberg region which incorporates the Welgevonden Game Reserve and is also home to the big five as well as a variety of other game including the rare and shy aardwolf. Bird life is also excellant. There is a lot of history in this area including artefacts of stone age times.
Both destinations are easily included into a safari holiday of South African and can also be complimented with a few nights in either Sun City or extending to the Kruger area.
