   Travel Essentials
  • The seasons offer little in way of variety, apart from the change in the rainfall, which tends to be more abundant in the winter. All in all though, any time is good for your Bali holidays. One thing is sure, though  - check out the dates of the major Indonesian holidays and tourist seasons. The end of Ramadan tends to be busy with domestic tourists filling resorts and bringing about a rotating high season when it comes to prices.
  • If you’re sick and tired of hawkers and street vendors trying to talk you into yet another ‘bargain’, avoid the parts of the beach closer to scooter stands and footpaths leading to the street, which means sitting closer to the sea, behind a virtual, invisible barrier which it is customary for the hawkers to respect. This way you’ll avoid getting hassled.
  • If you’re after a bit of surf, then Surf Travel Online is the site for you. It has all the latest updates on surf camps, charters and inclusive surf trips to the more remote Indonesian locations off the beaten track, as well as chartered trips to Nusa Lembongan.
  • Avoid going out on a limb and have a real treat in one of the local warung street stalls.  are seriously cheap, no-frills hangouts, each serving something different. The food can be seen in glass at the front of the stall/rickshaw. Take a seat, make a selection and get the real flavour of Bali real cheap. It’s where the locals eat, and that’s always a good endorsement.
  • To get a real feel of authentic Balinese culture during your Bali holidays, visit Murni’s, a guide to all thing Balinese, from shopping, including buying the appropriate dress to don while attending certain ceremonies, right through  to the local language and religion.
  • If you are one for trying the local language everywhere you go, here are few basic words and phrases in Bahasa Indonesia which may prove good at breaking the ice. Try the phrases selamat pagi (good morning), tolong (please) and terima kasih (thank you), for starters. For an introduction to the language, check out Bahasa Indonesia in 7 Days.
  • The best way to get around Bali is to drive, ride, or walk on your own, but transport can be a bit risky, with few traffic regulations and even fewer signs or wardens – don’t go wild whether you drive, hire a moped or ride a bike.
  •  Trying to beat the price down in the local stalls is part of the whole shopping experience. Experience the genuine feel of the marketplace by haggling for value – just remember the exchange rate – it might be that you’ve spent the last half hour quibbling over the equivalent of a pint of lager…
