The quickest way to Essaouira, Morocco – avoid the nearest airport!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Now that there are flight options to both Marrakech (Easyjet, Ryanair, Thomsonfly and Royal Air Maroc) and Agadir (Ryanair &  Easyjet), when planning a trip  to Essaouira, a look at a map will probably have you heading to Agadir – don’t!

Fleewinter, the UK’s leading independent specialist for Morocco holidays knows the country inside out and warns customers against flying to Agadir – even though it is closer.

Comments Alisdair Luxmoore, Managing Director: “Many people book flights to Agadir after looking at a map and being fooled into thinking that must be the best option as it is closer than Marrakech.  However the road from Agadir is nowhere near as good and an average drive time will be around 4 hours, compared with 2.5 hours from Marrakech.  There are also lots more flights to Marrakech and it is closer to the UK, meaning less fuel being burned for those who like to try and minimise their carbon footprint.

“Marrakech is also a much more exciting and colourful destination than Agadir and is perfect for stopping for a night or two at either end of a stay in Essaouira, or for hiking excursions into the Atlas Mountains.

Fleewinter has recently opened Rebali, a unique complex of six traditionally designed riads along the coast from Essaouira, sleeping from 2 to 10 people.

The properties have modern touches such as electrically operated glass sliding roofs, and there is also a hammam, and chefs on site who can deliver meals to riads on request (therefore private accommodation with the convenience of hotel-style service).

There are swimming pools (the larger villas have private pools), tennis courts and the ocean-facing properties are just 100m from an expansive, white, sandy beach. Rooms can be booked individually or entire properties can be taken over by groups.  Prices from £40 per person per night (two sharing), on a B&B basis.

Fleewinter is a fully-bonded operator, and can book flights, transfers and car hire on request.  Every booking also receives a copy of Fleewinter’s exclusive Insider Guide Notes to Morocco.  Call 020 7112 0019 (www.fleewinter.com).

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Unlike Europe, holidays in Morocco – which is under 3 hours away from the UK – remains extraordinarily good value for money.  Why not travel to Essaouira on the coast at the end of June, before the school holidays start, and witness the Gnawa World Music Festival (24-28 June)?  Thousands of people crowd the streets, wandering between the open-air stages. There’s a good range of top Gnawan musicians and international artists playing many different styles of music. Fleewinter has a wide choice of accommodation including actress Stephanie Beacham’s pad (Dar Perfecta) which you can rent for just £500 for the whole week.  It sleeps 6 in three bedrooms, so take four friends and it comes down to just £84 per person.  Fleewinter can also book flights and transfers on Request.  Call 020 7112 0019 (www.fleewinter.com.

Sex in the City on the Beach in Morocco!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

February 2010: Alisdair Luxmoore, the owner of tour operator Fleewinter was bemused last month when visiting the new Rebali riad complex near Essaouira to discover a huge crew from Hollywood filming Sex in the City with the famous female actors right on the beach in front of the riads.

Re-creating a Miami Beach scene, the crew realised they had overlooked the requirement of sun beds.

Alisdair came to the rescue, cannily ‘hiring’ out the entire collection of sun beds that are located at the six Riads making a few extra and most welcome Dirham so that Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Carrie (Sarah-Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) had somewhere to park their derrieres to chat!

Rebali is a unique complex of 6 luxurious Riads, located in the village of Sidi Kaouki on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, 20 minutes south of Essaouira and 100 metres from the beach.

The 6 properties, which have from 2–4 bedrooms, have been built in a traditional Riad style, with a central courtyard but with high tech functionality such as remote controlled sliding glass roofs and all the properties have private gardens, roof terraces and balconies.  Other touches include large double showers and four poster beds.

There is a large, communal swimming pool and the complex also has a private hammam (with steam room and massage), tennis courts and an on-site kitchen who will deliver meals to the Riads.  The larger riads have private pools.

Comments Alisdair Luxmoore who managed the project: “What we have tried to do is combine the very best aspects of the exclusivity and privacy of a villa – which we specialise in with the service and intimacy of a boutique hotel.

“This has probably been one of the most rewarding projects that I have ever been involved with and our vision for the finished product kept us going through the many challenges we encountered along the way.”

The Riads can be taken over for exclusive use by families or small groups, or individual rooms in the larger properties can be rented by couples.

There is a current introductory offer with rooms from just £20 per person per night including breakfast (two sharing a room), prepared by the on-site cooks.

Cheap Morocco Flights

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Everyone like to knock the low cost airlines these days and admittedly their policy of charging for every hiccup is maddening, but I have to say I am big fan.  Unlike most tour operators we don’t mind if client book flights themselves and whilst I wish we still had BA running the Marrakech route for people who don’t want to start their Morocco holiday with a rush to grab a seat, I think the budget guys provide a fantastic service and enable you to fit in 2 holiday for the price on 1 normal one.  For example I have just booked 5 days in December for my family of 4 for £280 flying Gatwick/Marrakech with Easyjet.  Add in £400 for an apartment in Essaouira (great at that time of year) and that is a £170 per person.  What an amazing price for a family holiday.

PS Top tip.  When travelling with a family book speedy boarding for 1 person only to bag seats together Saves £42 for a family of 4 and makes getting seat together a cinch.
