Fleewinter adds Dar Jaguar to Marrakech portfolio

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Fleewinter has added the spectacular riad Dar Jaguar, owned by internationally acclaimed designer Lucia Silver, to its portfolio of top-notch properties in Marrakech.

Completely renovated, the ancient property is a perfect example of a traditional Moroccan guesthouse.  Conveniently located in the heart of the Old Medina in Marrakech, it neighbours the exotic Place des Epices (spice market) and is under a five-minute stroll from the famous Jemma el Fna Square, which bursts into life at dusk every evening when the food stalls, musicians and snake charmers arrive to ply their trade.

The riad has a slightly unusual blend of traditional North African Moorish architecture with a touch of the Orient. Built around a central courtyard, there are palm trees inter twined with bougainvillea which drape onto an antique marble fountain.

Dar Jaguar offers four spacious en suites and one Royal Suite, as well as three different salons and a large sundrenched roof terrace with a magnificent view over the city. There is also a plunge pool set under the ancient carved woodwork and huge Syrian chandelier designed by the owner.

The Riad has a full complement of staff including a talented chef (Fatiha), chauffeurs, masseurs, beauty technicians and tour guides; personal shoppers can also be arranged as requested.

Fleewinter has a special introductory price of £125 per room per night (with the exception of the Royal Suite which is £180 per night). Based on two sharing.

Fleewinter can organise flights on request and recommends that private taxi transfers are booked through them before leaving the UK. This is not only cheaper (contrary to guidebook advice) but more reliable and ensures a hassle-free start to the holiday.

Fleewinter can also organise trips to the coast, treks in the Atlas Mountains (with private guide plus mules), and personal shoppers in Marrakech.

For further information call 020 7112 0019 (www.fleewinter.com).

Lucia Silver’s boutique opens inside Dar Jaguar after Easter bringing the best of her exquisite loungewear, kaftans and jewellery from the London business, State of Grace. Fleewinter guests can enjoy a 15% discount in both London and Marrakesh. www.thestateofgrace.com.

Cheap Morocco Flights

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Everyone like to knock the low cost airlines these days and admittedly their policy of charging for every hiccup is maddening, but I have to say I am big fan.  Unlike most tour operators we don’t mind if client book flights themselves and whilst I wish we still had BA running the Marrakech route for people who don’t want to start their Morocco holiday with a rush to grab a seat, I think the budget guys provide a fantastic service and enable you to fit in 2 holiday for the price on 1 normal one.  For example I have just booked 5 days in December for my family of 4 for £280 flying Gatwick/Marrakech with Easyjet.  Add in £400 for an apartment in Essaouira (great at that time of year) and that is a £170 per person.  What an amazing price for a family holiday.

PS Top tip.  When travelling with a family book speedy boarding for 1 person only to bag seats together Saves £42 for a family of 4 and makes getting seat together a cinch.

Marrakech Riads for Real Morocco Holidays

Friday, May 8th, 2009

I have just returned from inspecting some new hotels in Marrakech and slightly by accident visited one of the typical 4 star package hotel on the edge of town.  As a rule we avoid large tourist hotels and there can no destination where the contrast between the places favoured by the package operators and those preferred by us is more stark.  In Marrakech we offer beautiful converted merchant houses called riads which are run as little stylish boutique hotels.  Ok, they often don’t have minibar or 24 room service but the style and individuality compared the ghastly stack of boxes with beige swirly carpet more than makes up for the difference.  But more importantly you are a part of real Morocco not a tourist ghetto hidden away.  Maybe I am holiday snob but a Marrakech Riad is the only way to have a proper Morocco holiday (oh, and the price is about 30% less as well!)

Morocco Holiday Money Rip Off

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Don’t exchange your cash in the UK if you are going on a Morocco holiday….Morocco has a closed currency and up until recently it was impossible to exchange pounds for Moroccan Dirham in the UK. The Moroccan government has just relaxed the laws and it now possible, but beware. I went through Luton airport yesterday and they were offering less than 10 dirham to the pound vs almost 12 if you changed your money in Morocco. A whopping 20% profit! If you are taking money wait until you get to Morocco and change cash when you arrive. Even better make sure your airport transfer to your Marrakech riad or Essaouira accommodation is pre-paid and then go to a cashpoint when you have settled in – there are loads in Morocco. This option is even better if you have an account with a bank like Nationwide that gives you excellent overseas rates on withdrawals.
