The distinctive boot shape of Italy makes it one of the most easily recognisable countries in the world, with a long peninsular like main land and the island of Sardinia to the west and Sicily to the south. Over 75% of the country is mountainous with two predominant ranges, the Alpine ranges with peaks such as Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn dominate the north whilst the Apennines (the backbone of Italy), curve down from Genoa to Calbria for an approximate 1,220km! Rome is the renowned capital but this does not detract from the many regional capitals that are dispersed throughout the country such as Florence, Milan, Venice or Naples.each famous in its own right..
The Lakes region of the Alpine foothills is home to world renowned names such as Lake Como and Garda and are enchantingly beautiful with the blue green waters and the dominating Alpine peaks. The lakes region offers the visitor the chance to explore the historical buildings and streets of Como, cycle the shores of the lake or windsurf the waters of Lake Garda.
Tuscany - This region provides a little bit of everything; historical architecture, some of the greatest collections of art, rolling countryside overflowing with vineyards, beautiful beaches and some of the best wines available. Although the spring and summer months attract the majority of tourists, Tuscany is as beautiful in the winter months as it is in the summer.
Umbria - One of the few landlocked Italian regions Umbria provides natural beauty and ancient civilisations and is respected as "Italy's green heart". Capped by many a medieval town the Apennines of the north command the region whilst Perugia, the regions capital, provides a variety of cultural traditions and a lively nightlife.
Amalfi Coast - one of the most stunning coastlines of Europe the Amalfi coastline stretches 50km east from Sorrento to Salerno. Beautiful winding roads traverse the cliff tops as crystal blue waters lap the shores and clifftop villages stare out to sea. The summer months obviously bring with them wealthy tourists so it is advisable to book early, otherwise Spring and Autumn are also great months in which to visit.
