Lamu Beaches, Lamu Town and Lamu Trips

Lamu is all about kicking your shoes off, forgetting the outside world and relaxing on its beautiful beaches. Your villa will have its own stretch of beach or you may chose to hire a boat to take you to another beach on the island. People come to Lamu to do precisely nothing and it doesn’t take long to get into the rhythm of long lazy days. If you do find it hard to chill out completely there are a few activities for you to enjoy.

A trip on a dhow (local and very traditional boat) is very romantic, especially at sunset. There will be plenty of willing dhow owners soliciting business but it is best to arrange one with your villa staff or hotel. Also be aware that the currents around the Lamu archipelago can be strong and you should check safety before you embark on your journey. A good trip would be to snorkel off the south eastern point of Manda Island (not for complete debutants because of the currents) or down the channel separating Lamu from the African mainland.

Lamu Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of mosques (23 in all) and well-preserved ancient houses lining its fascinating streets. It is definitely worth a visit and you can spend happy lazy hours just wandering around taking in the architecture of the stone houses. The museum is worth visiting as is the old fort. Lamu Town has no beach but an interesting harbour. There are several good places to eat in the Town. People are generally friendly and helpful and you’re pretty safe at any time of day or evening.

Lamu is all about lazing on the beach and you won’t find too many water sports here. Having said that, some resorts offer water skiing and windsurfing which is pretty good along the unprotected eastern coast of Lamu Island, where the winds make for good surfing.
Hiring a dhow and crew to go for a picnic cruise or deep sea fishing is good fun and there are plenty of willing boats owners ready to take you out.
Snorkelling around Lamu is good but not excellent. Much of the reef was destroyed in the tsunami. Also be aware that the tides and currents can be very strong so it is best to stay close to shore if you are a beginner or are snorkelling with children. The best spot is just off the southern tip of Manda Island, although the best reefs are hard to find and you’re better off asking a local to help you locate them!
