The main activities in the Maldives go something like this – sunbathing, swimming, relaxing, eating, relaxing, swimming, eating and then a bit more sunbathing. Then if you’re feeling adventurous perhaps a trip to the spa followed by more sunbathing, eating, sleeping, relaxing....
If however you find doing absolutely nothing in a heavenly paradise becomes tedious, there are a number of activities and excursions offered by the resorts.
Male Day Excursions – Depending on the location of your resort, Male can provide an accessible half day excursion back to the real world. With an impressive gold domed mosque, national museum and bustling market the capital of the Maldives has several points of interest, but more importantly it offers the only real opportunity to interact with local Maldivians and experience their unique way of life.
Traditional Fishing Villages – Most of the ‘inhabited’ islands in the Maldives are off limits to tourists unless they seek a permit from the Ministry of Atolls Administration. Often however the resorts will have an arrangement with a local island, which will enable you to experience the day to day life of a fishing village community. Again this is one of the only opportunities you will have to learn about the Maldivian people and their traditional way of life.
Cruising & Ocean Safaris – There are various options when it comes to cruising around the Atolls. You can go island hopping and enjoying some snorkelling and a picnic lunch on a number of deserted islands. You could take a luxury sunset cruise with dinner on board. Some resorts even offer cruise safaris where you can stay onboard for a couple of days in cabins as comfortable as the bungalows back on shore.
Seaplane Experiences – This can be a brilliant way to explore the Maldives and get a true sense of the Atolls outstanding beauty. Photographic group trips can be arranged, as can private excursions to uninhabited island and some of the more remote dive sites.

These range from the mighty Blue Whale (the largest animal alive) to the diminutive but highly acrobatic Spinner Dolphin.
Snorkeling, Scuba Diving & Submarine Tours – The shallow protected lagoons make for great snorkelling, and their submerged outer reefs are excellent for diving. There are also numerous dive site further afield that can be visited on a dive safari (day cruiser excursion) or a fly and dive (seaplane excursion) There are over 700 common fish species, thousands of invertebrates, plus sharks, manta rays, morays, groupers, etc. Even non-divers can experience the enchanting coral reefs and magnificent tropical fish of the Maldives from the comfort of an air-conditioned submarine. The German-built Whale submarine is the world's largest deep diving passenger submarine, with a 100% safety record.
