Situated not far from Bab Tarzout and the Zaouis (shrines) of Sidi bel Abbès and Sidi ben Slimane el-Jazouli, La Maison Arabe began life as a restaurant in the 1940s and in its time has been patronised by well-known names including Winston Churchill. Today it is an elegant and refined example of traditional Moroccan hospitality.

This is a captivating place, full of charm, built around two flower-filled courtyards, one of which has an old olive tree at its centre. Restoration paid homage to traditional building methods and walls are covered in tadelakt and floors in bejmat, small sand-coloured bricks. Cedar wood features everywhere, notably in the library.

Public and private spaces are tastefully decorated and furnished in rich silks and brocades. Colours just sing out at you and are reminiscent of the sights and sounds of the nearby souks. There is plenty of space to relax and take tea, either in the shady courtyards or in one of the many salons.

The 9 double rooms and 8 suites are very refined and have been decorated with authentic touches. Each room is air-conditioned and heated in winter and has satellite TV and safe. Most rooms have their own private terrace, surrounded by oleander, plumbago and jasmine. The marble or granite bathrooms are glorious and very colourful.

There is a wonderful swimming pool (not heated) and garden just a short ride away in the palmeraie. A car will take you there at your convenience – it is a great place to relax away from the heat of the city.

You can take breakfast in your room, on the terrace, in the courtyard, or in any of the salons. Dining at La Maison Arabe is legendary. The restaurant offers a full choice of traditional Moroccan or international food.

There is also a cookery school where you can try your hand at local dishes such as tagines, couscous and delicious pastries.

The staff is extremely obliging, and will help you with anything you need from directions to anywhere in Marrakech to booking you a massage.

A car is available to collect you from the airport.

The property is located in Marrakech, just 20 minutes by car from the airport.
