Bergen has the most spectacular setting of all the Norwegian cities, being surrounded by mountains nearly 600m high, and it is deservedly known as the 'gateway to the fjords'.
3 nights in a the stylish Hanseatic Hotel in the heart of Bryggen wharf - an area listed by the UNESCO World Heritage makes you perfectly situated to enjoy all the cultural, historical and natural experiences of Norway's second biggest city .
This trip allows you to spend time exploring the historic harbour, visit the bustling fish market and take a ride on the funicular railway to a marvellous viewpoint above the city centre. Also worth a visit are the composer Grieg's home and the idyllic island of Lysoen, whilst the excellent Aquarium is a must for children.
Alesund

Alesund is a charming 'art nouveau' town built on several small islands in the northern fjord area. Like Bergen, it acts as a perfect gateway to the fjords, being close to both the Geirangefjord and the Nordfjord. Fleewinter recommends the super-stylish wharf-side Brosundet Hotel which also boasts a small converted lighthouse honeymoon suite at the end of the dock. Alternatively, for those who want to be closer to nature but still close enough to town, the Storfjord Hotel sits amid acres of woodland with views over the fjord waters.
Your time in Alesund can be spent exploring the town, cruising through the Geirangerfjord, and experiencing the famous and hair-raising Trollstigveien road.
As always these are just suggested itineraries to give you an idea of what is available and what can be achieved. For expert personal advise please give us a call on 0207 112 0019 or email us.
A week is a perfect length of time to visit Norway and allows you to experience a greater variety of Norwegian life and topography. We highly recommend a two-tiered stay, combining either Bergen or Alesund with some time to relax / get active (depending on your preference) either somewhere in the fjords or if you want to stay local, in one of the more rural locations outside the Bergen / Alesund but still close enough to the action.

Spend a few nights exploring Hanseatic Bergen, enjoying its rich cultural scene, not to mention its beautiful natural positioning before heading into the depths of the fjords with their dramatic mountain peaks and crisp, clear waters. A stay in one of our boutique 'experience' hotels such as Hotel Mundal and choose to be as relaxed or as active as you like, where you can choose to spend time pottering around the many quirky bookstores in Norway's Book Town of Mundal, taking a rowing boat out into the fjord waters, experiencing some of the world's most famous hiking trails, climb a Glacier or even kayak amongst it's ice islands.

If you want to stay close to Bergen but not miss out on the stunning surrounding scenery, a good way to do it is to spend a few nights in the town centre followed by a few nights in the beautiful Bjornefjord, less than an hour away where you can stay literally at the foot of the fjord waters. Whilst Bjornefjorden Guesthouse offers a home-from-home environment in charming converted farm buildings, Solstrand Hotel provides the ultimate in indulgent relaxation. Sample activities include Glacier hiking, fishing, sailing, hiking and even helicopter and seaplane rides over the fjords.

Alesund, like Bergen offers a gateway to the fjords and so a perfect way to spend a week is to enjoy a few days in the town centre, followed by a few nights in the depths of some of the world's most breathtaking surroundings. Hotel Brosundet has to be the best, a recently restored wharf warehouse that literally rises up from the waters edge. After a few nights in the town centre, head into the mountains and forests to experience true escapism. Overlooking the stunning Storfjord and Sunnmore Alps, the Storfjord Hotel acts a perfect base for exploring Norway's renowned West Coast, including the most famous Geirangerfjord. For those with energy to spare there are a wealth of activities for you to enjoy during your stay, regardless of the time of year you choose to visit. Norway's beautiful scenery offers you many exciting outdoor experiences, including various water sports like white water rafting, kayaking fishing and scuba diving. There are also ample opportunities for walks, cycling, golf and cruises.

This enough time to either completely relax, staying in one or two places, or if you really want to see it all, you can travel along the West coast from Bergen to Alesund (or vice versa) stopping along the way at various points to enjoy the most beautiful natural scenery of Norway's western fjords. Fleewinter recommends a multi-centred trip of 3 - 4 stops, with a minimum of at least one of the charming hotels in the fjords themselves. Please email us or call on 0207 112 0019 to discuss the best possible itinerary for your needs.
