Club Villa is a chic hotel that forms part of the Geoffrey Bawa collection. It has a large garden and direct access to the beach. The owner describes the hotel as "Neither a resort, nor a hotel. Instead it is a home away from home. In a setting that induces a sense of hypnotic relaxation, where every wish is anticipated and answered by discreet staff whose presence is felt rather than heard or seen."

The 17 suites have recently been renovated, with contemporary bathrooms and air-conditioning in all. Many feature a mezzanine floor, ideal for stowing your things or retreating to after a busy day by the pool.

There is also a special Club Suite set away from the main building with its own private garden, generously proportioned bedroom, separate living area and two attached bathrooms -ideal for a honeymoon couple or small family.

The swimming pool is located discreetly to the right hand side of the garden. It is extremely beautiful when the sun hits it, but can get fairly busy when the hotel is full, with lively children.

There is a restaurant on site that is popular with ex-pats and visitors alike. The menu features both Sri-Lankan and European food, but the seafood is by far the winner. A speciality of the house is the barbeque and champagne dinner which for a little extra can be enjoyed privately.

The bar offers a selection of wines, liqueurs and fresh fruit drinks and owner Hameed and his son Richel make fantastic evening hosts.

Located approximately 60km south of Colombo there are plenty of sights in the area and good watersports on the Bentota river. Alternatively you can stay put and indulge in an ayerverdic massage at the hotel, find time for a spot of yoga or alternatively just stroll along the wonderfully private beach.

Please note that there is a railway track that runs along the bottom of the garden at Club Villa. We think this is a wonderful addition and a privilege to watch the old trains trundle past loaded to the brim with its colourful human cargo. It is said that you don't notice them after the first night, but still something to be aware of.
