12 years before Bell patented the telephone, the Galle Face Hotel was welcoming heads of state and royalty as their guests. Now an extensive restoration of the South wing completed in 2004 has brought us the Galle Face Regency which combines the Victorian heritage and glamour of the original hotel with modern luxury and comfort.
WHAT ITS GOT!
61 luxury rooms and suites span four floors, with the chose of ocean, spa or piazza views. Each room is en-suite, fully air-conditioned and served by a butler’s pantry for personal in-suite attention. For added convenience guests can also request private check-ins and check-outs when staying at the hotel.
FOOD & DRINK
The dinning opinions at the Galle Face are extremely varied. Sample some delicious seafood at the Sea Spray Restaurant, order off the a la carte on the veranda or enjoy the sumptuous 1864 fine dining restaurant.
The Checker Board is extremely popular for cocktails at sunset, offering a stunning view and a great atmosphere as the Colombo elite arrive to unwind after a hard days work. Alternatively, leading off from the main lobby you will find the Wine Lounge which has been designed as a tribute to the hotel's grand history.
For the past 140 years every afternoon at that perfect time of day High Tea has been served to guests. Over 20 delicious specials are served up with steaming cups of refreshing Ceylon tea. Don’t miss this age old tradition.
FUN & GAMES
Wander to the nearby shopping malls, and visit some of the local sites including the Town Hall, Independence Square, the Fort Area or Slave Island. Or stay closer to home and indulge yourself at the Galle Face's beautiful new spa.
DRAWBACKS
This is a larger hotel and so not something we would normally recommend. Having said that the Galle Face Hotel has become such an iconic symbol of Colombo that it is really the only place to stay while in the city.
It would be better if this magnificent building was not in Colombo with it busy roads and hectic atmosphere, but the cosmopolitan feel of cocktails at sunset is great nonetheless.
WHAT OTHERS THOUGHT
"Comfortable 21st century facilities against the faded glory background of the adjacent 19th century Galle Face where in the foyer the roll of celebrity guests over the past 200 years makes for fascinating reading; excellent value in Verandah and Sea Spray Restaurants; an ideal place to spend the first couple of days relaxing and perhaps exploring Colombo, before setting off."
