Thambili House - SLG004
Galle Fort

Bedrooms: 3, Sleeps 8
Price Guide: £2,000 - £2,500 per week

Thambili House is a 300 year old Dutch merchant house situated on Rampart Street inside the Galle Fort. The house can sleep 8 and has brilliant views from the front balcony over Triton Bastion and the Indian Ocean.

WHAT ITS GOT

The old shell of Thambili House was purchased in 1999 by its now Hong Kong based owners and fully restored by local architect Rohan Aluwihara. The house is in excellent condition and can comfortably sleep 8 people in 2 double bedrooms and 1 family suite containing one double and two single beds.

The ground floor offers a sizable living area with a billiards table, attached bar/kitchenette and guest toilet. At either end of the living area large doors lead out onto private courtyards. The one to the front of the property is an ideal spot for breakfast and the second has a covered patio where guests can dine, and a swimming pool.

On the first floor there is a small TV/DVD area and two bedrooms. The Nutmeg Master Suite has a four poster bed, a beautiful sunken bath and a balcony overlooking the front courtyard, fort ramparts and the Indian Ocean. Across the hallway the Ginger Family Suite has a double and two single four poster beds, en-suite bathroom with shower and a private balcony overlooking the swimming pool.

The final guest room - Cinnamon Bedroom - is on the top floor in the eves. This is a quirky room with a private romantic twist.

The house has wireless internet throughout and is fully air-conditioned.

FOOD & DRINK

A hearty breakfast is included in the room rate and tea, coffee and bottled water are provided free of charge. There will be cold beer and wine in stock upon your arrival to be replaced if used by the end of your stay.

The in house Chef - Harsha is trained in local and western cuisine with Sri Lankan curry being his speciality. He will advise you on fresh produce and suggest a menu for home dining at lunchtime or in the evenings. This is reasonably priced and can be catered to your tastes.

Galle also has a fantastic array of local restaurants. Please consult the house staff and also our Fleewinter guide.

FUN & GAMES

The Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a beautiful place to explore. Start with a sunset walk around the fort walls - 2.5km in all - greeting the jogging Sri Lankans as you go. Later, wander around the cobbled labyrinth-like streets for a real insight into life here and a mooch in the Fort's boutique gift shops and antique dealers.

Alternatively, head to the nearby beaches where the marine life is said to rival that of the Great Barrier Reef. Or travel inland for a look at a traditional Sri Lankan village, local crafts and beautiful temples. Trips to Yala National Park for a leopard & elephant safariS are also possible, as well as excursions to the Rainforest, gem mines and low lying tea plantations.

WHAT OTHERS THOUGHT

"We’ve just returned from our trip and I wanted to let you know how lovely Thambili House is. It was as well that I had already paid a deposit for the hotel in Hikkaduwa or I would’ve been tempted to stay the rest of our holiday there. I just love Galle Fort and this house is superb.

The accommodation was beautiful, the staff always there to serve without being intrusive. The included breakfasts were excellent and we found that the snack menu for lunch etc, was as cheap, if not cheaper, than most of the local cafes and bars and of a higher standard. We ate dinner both evenings and these were wonderful, with fresh ingredients and huge portions. We had a guest on our second evening and Hirzan did us proud.

The overall experience was wonderful and I would happily recommend Thambili to anyone else. Once again, thank you for suggesting Thambili. (June Jach - July 09)
