Kahanda Kanda (Yellow Moon Mountain) is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic boutique hotels, perched on top of a 10-acre tea estate high above Koggala Lake with stunning views across the waters and jungle.
Yes it’s not on the beach, but then neither is the true beauty of Sri Lanka or the true peace and tranquillity that the island offers. The live in owner of Kahanda Kanda, George Cooper was so enamoured with the views from the site that he brought the 10 acres on the fourth day of his first ever trip to Sri Lanka, with absolutely no idea what he would do with the site.
It wasn't long though before his interior design training joined forced with architect ... to create Kahanda Kanda, instantly recognisable due to its single bold orange wall used to represent the robes of the Buddhist monks.
Accommodation is offered in terraced stand alone en-suite pavilions whilst the living and dining areas are also housed in their own pavilions as if to emphasise that in SL, doing one thing at a time is the preferred path.
The 5 double bedrooms are divided into 4 free standing pavilions. The master bedroom (The Peacock Suite) has a private garden and floor to ceiling shutters facing south that look across jungle and Koggala Lake. Getting up for dawn is to some so much more enjoyable when you don't have actually get out of bed. Two pavilions have private terraces overlooking the tea estate whilst the other bedrooms enjoy the privacy of a landscape garden flooded with fragrant flowers and plants.
The master bedroom has two bathrooms, each with an outdoor shower that gazes up to the sky. Two other bedrooms have outdoor showers set in a private terraced garden whilst the other two bedrooms have bathrooms with twin showers. All bathrooms are en-suite.
The pavilion has views across Koggala Lake, the tea estate and the jungle and is surrounded by lily ponds on either side.
The dining pavilion seats 10 and can be divided to accommodate smaller parties. With stunning views similar to those of its 'sitting' neighbour the dining pavilion is responsible for a feast of all the senses.
There is a resident chef, an assistant chef, 2 houseboys and a maid who are there to look after you.
A 21 by 9 metre pool on one side is an infinity edge that runs off into views of Koggala Lake and the jungle. A cascade at the deep end falls from a carved opening in the end wall.
If you’re looking for something a bit different in a holiday and want to feel as though you have found somewhere that few other people ever will, then Kahanda Kanda would be perfect for you. Plus the beach is only a 15 minute drive away with numerous staff willing to help and assist you there and so this hotel literally can provide the best of both worlds.
