Saffron Beach Villa is the latest and to date the most contemporary villa to graced Sri Lanka's shores. Its three available minimalistic bedrooms are unlike anything else on the island, both creatively and stylistically.
For its owners Ian Fairweather and Bryan Smith this project has been a labour of love which has taken five years to complete with absolutely no expense spared or detail missed.
WHAT ITS GOT
You enter the villa through a covered walk way that opens into an internal garden, accented by a vivid orange wall that sets of the planting beautifully. A stunning floor to ceiling square wooden door then slides back to reveal the living space with its fully glass fronted vista that allows views down the garden to the ocean. Privacy was not a major consideration in the design of this property, but the wow factor is worth it!!
The open plan living space runs practically the length of the ground floor, as does a shallow lotus pond in the centre of the building. At the far right of the living space, huge glass doors open on to a sun terrace and beyond that at three tiered swimming pool.
At the other end of the living space you will find one enclosed bedroom with air conditioning and an en-suite bathroom. A staircase suspended over the internal pond then leads upstairs to the Master bedroom and the other guest room. Both are extremely special, different and quite frankly a little weird, but in a good way!
The back wall of the master bedroom has been cut away so the room becomes almost open air and you can look down at the living space and internal pond on the ground floor. A foot bridge links the master bedroom to its open air en-suite bathroom.
The second bedroom on this level has a corridor instead of a foot bridge that links through to a more secluded open air bathroom. The sea facing sides of each bedroom are again glass with uninterrupted views of the ocean. These windows can be slid open should guest wish to hear the sea while they sleep and make the most of the ocean breeze. There are only ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms.
The decoration is very simple, mainly in crisp white with the odd splash of colour from items of furniture. A handful of carefully selected photographs taken by Bryan who is a professional photographer, have been superimposed onto large floor to ceiling glass panels. They add extra interest and personalise the villa, without conflicting with it minimalistic look.
FOOD & DRINK
The villa comes with two excellent chefs who have been trained in the UK, Thailand and Singapore. The villa has a spotless stainless steel kitchen, as well as a traditional wood fired Sri Lankan kitchen that delivers authentic local flavours cooked in earthenware pots, should you wish to experience the real Sri Lankan cuisine. This feature is unique to Saffron Villa. Fine wines can be ordered by arrangement for your stay.
For an additional cost guests can also have access to their very own private island, which is ideal for drinks at sunset and dining under the stars. The island is covered by huge cashew trees, mangoes, cinnamon and coconut palms.
LOCATION, FUN & GAMES
Saffron Beach Villa is located on the Matara Road in Habaradua just 7 miles South of the Galle Fort (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is a great base point for trips to Yala National Park Safaris, exploration of the Sinharaja Rainforest, local turtle hatcheries and cultural hotspots.
