Era Beach

The newly opened Era Beach is a beautiful small hotel located on the south coast of Sri Lanka close to the historical Galle Fort UNESCO World Heritage Site.

WHAT ITS GOT

The hotels architecture pays homage to Sri Lanka's colonial past whilst combined with stylish contemporary design and furniture. Originally two elongated pavilions sat on the site. These have been restored and linked by an open air courtyard and impressive two storey building to the rear. Huge columns run the height of main building and dramatic sweeping staircases lead from a wide balcony down into the foyer.

The hotel has eight bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms. Two standard rooms are located on the ground floor leading off from the foyer. One bedroom is a double and one is a twin bedroom. These rooms offer good value for money, but have smaller bathrooms and no private outdoor space. There are also two Garden Suites on the ground floor leading off from the outside courtyard. These are lovely rooms with small private patios gardens. Upstairs there are four spacious Sea View Rooms, each with access to the balcony.

The original pavilions now serve as a dining room and on the opposite side a bar and lounge. They both have covered and open air terraces and the stunning infinity swimming pool runs between the two and widens into the garden.

FOOD & DRINK

Having worked for beloved institutes such as Fortnum & Masons and Leith’s of London the management team at Era have put a heavy emphasis on great food and service. Various menus have been designed for different areas of the hotel. A sophisticated a la carte menu is offered in the main dining room combining a quirky blend of European and Asian food. A casual tapas menu is available in the lounge and bar and the light lunch menu with dishes such as lobster salad and light lemongrass soup is ideal for lazy moments around the pool or on the beach. Guests are welcome to dine in any of these areas or on their private balconies/patios.

FUN & GAMES

The hotel is in a great location. Possible activities include whale and dolphin watching, diving and deep sea fishing, Sri Lankan cookery courses, spa treatments, excursions to the Galle Fort, low lying tea plantations and day safaris to Yala and Uda Walawe National Parks. It is also very enjoyable to hire some bikes and peddle off to discover the lush rural areas just inland from the coast. Here you will find paddie fields, local Sri Lankan villages, crafts centres and beautiful small white temples.

DRAWBACKS

Please note that as with most of the southern coastline swimming in the sea can be limited because of a shallow reef which makes access to the water difficult. Openings in the reef do occur at regular intervals along the coast but you may have to walk a short distance along the beach from your hotel to find one. The staff will be able to advise you on this and there is always the swimming pool.
