Bonnieland is a beautiful colonial bungalow with 3 bedrooms, perched on the hill top above Badulla. Surrounded by 17 acres of land this former family home offers access to a part of Sri Lanka rarely visited by tourists.


WHAT ITS GOT

There is no better word to describe Bonnieland than charm. The 3 bedrooms and various living spaces are each brimming with character, decorated in traditional colonial style with antiques throughout.

The house was originally built in 1918 by an Oxford educated Ceylonese gentleman, Mr Selviah and his Irish sweetheart Bonnie, who would climb the hill every Sunday after church to admire the views. Nowadays, the house is owned and managed by a extremely glamorous lady called Sinikka De Mel who is an excellent host and bewitched us for hours with her stories of old Ceylon.

FOOD & DRINK

The chef specialises is traditional Sri Lanka cookery and has worked for the family for many years. We enjoyed curried okra, followed by the best mulligatawny soup I have ever tried. The fish is also meant to be excellent bought daily from the east coast. Western dishes can be provided on request and as for drinks we were offered a wide selection on arrival, but opted for a classic and predictable gin and tonic.

FUN & GAMES

There is great walking and mountain biking in the surrounding area if you feel like being active. Day trips are possible to scenic Ella and Haputale, the Dunhinda waterfalls, the Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya or Horton Plains national park, World's Ena and Adam's Peak. Tea Factory tours can also be arranged.

DRAWBACKS

The bathrooms at Bonnieland are shared and could do with a little updating, but they are still very charming and in keeping with the property as a whole.
