The Galle Fort located on the southwest corner of Sri Lanka was founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese and is the best example of a European built fortified city in South Asia . Nowadays it is home to a large Muslim community as well as artists, writers and ex-pats who live together harmoniously in this cosmopolitan yet peaceful walled city.
With numerous ethic influences the Galle Fort has some fantastic places to stay and can make for a wonderful holiday in Sri Lanka. Many of the old Moorish mansions have latterly been turned into stunning villas, with impressive open air central courtyards and cutting edge interior design. Extremely sort after by western investors these charming properties provide an interesting alternative to those on the nearby beaches and are ideal for a holiday in Sri Lanka with a difference.
