Tucked well away from the busier beaches in Zanzibar, Unguja Lodge is a tranquil and relaxing resort, conceived to marry luxury beach holiday and the natural environment.
Unguja Lodge is definitely stylish. But it’s also decidedly relaxing – the ultimate in good beach living. The building’s organic forms and stylish finish are complemented perfectly by the lush tropical setting and the rough coral rocks that surround it.
There are 11 self-contained villas which give the resort a relaxed, “non hotel” feel. The 7 Sea View Villas and 1 Family Room (sleeping 6) all have sea views and each has its own private terrace where you can relax and watch the world float by. The 3 Baobab Villas are situated beneath a gigantic baobab tree just a few yards further from the shore. These look out over the gardens and are more private than the other villas.
Sea View Villas have ceiling fans, mosquito nets, safe, open plan sitting rooms and en-suite shower with separate toilet. Each has a loft with an extra double bed if necessary.
The Baobab Villas are nestled amongst the lush foliage of the gardens and have ceiling fans, air-conditioning, mosquito nets, safe, open plan sitting rooms and en-suite shower with separate toilet. Each has a loft with an extra double bed if necessary. They also have private plunge pools which are great for dipping into to cool off after a stint on the beach. The Family House has ceiling fans, mosquito nets, safe, open plan sitting rooms and two en-suite shower rooms and one separate toilet. On the second floor are two bedrooms each with two single beds and en-suite bathrooms.
Dining at Unguja Lodge is a very enjoyable experience. The head chef, Nyerere, is a local who learnt his craft alongside chefs from around the world. He now offers his own delicious fusion of local and international cuisine, using the best fresh ingredients.
Unguja Lodge sits above a small coral cliff. You can reach the beach down a few wooden steps. At high tide the beach almost completely disappears but at low tide the soft, pristine sand is exposed and the beach comes to life again. You can watch as the locals set off in their fishing boats or search for shellfish. Join them and explore the rock pools which are full of sea life or simply relax on the beach and soak up the rays. Unguja Lodge has boats available and accessible at all times, so low tides do not restrict the times you can explore the Indian Ocean and its riches. There is a lovely reef right on your doorstep and there’s plenty to see either snorkelling or diving.
The Lodge has its own PADI dive centre and caters for beginners and experienced divers.
